Import Sony FDR-X3000 4K Videos to FCP X, FCE or iMovie for Editing

We write this tutorial to help those who are having issues editing Sony FDR-X3000 footage in FCP X, FCE or iMovie smoothly. It explains a workaround to transcode Sony FDR-X3000 video to ProRes 422 or AIC codec for use in FCP X, FCE or iMovie with optimum performance.

TSony’s FDR-X3000 Action Camera produces sharp videos and still images with reduced motion artifacts from vibrations and other camera movement. Using the XAVC S codec, the FDR-X3000 can record UltraHD resolution 4K (3840 x 2160) at 30p with a bitrate of 100 Mb/s or 24p with a bitrate of 60 Mb/s. Besides 4K, it can record Full HD 1080p at 50 Mb/s in XAVC S and up to 28 Mb/s in the higher-compressed MP4 mode.

For a faster and more fluid Sony FDR-X3000 and FCP X, FCE or iMovie workflow, we would recommend transcoding Sony FDR-X3000 footage to ProRes/AIC first by UFUSoft XAVC S Converter for Mac. Apple ProRes is FCP X’s favorite editing codec, which FCP X will recognize and handle well, and AIC MOV is the best format for FCE or iMovie. Read on to learn a quick guide on how to encode Sony FDR-X3000 video files to ProRes 422 for FCP X or AIC for FCE or iMovie editing.
